Could It Happen Again? Sixteen years’ ago the Society faced winding up because of its most active members felt unable to continue. It was rescued by keen new members, but many of them are also now advanced in years and are warning that a similar crisis could be nearing. This website describes our wide range of activities and achievements since 2010 and we hope that there are younger Abergavenny residents willing to give some time to continuing and extending our work, much of which is in partnership with the local authorities and others.
Proposal for 500 homes on the lower slopes of the Little Skirrid
In December 2024 we decided to oppose an otherwise welcome development plan proposal for 500 homes on the lower slopes of the Little Skirrid unless a free-flowing crossing of the A465 and the railway is provided for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters to reach the town.
In May we submitted a 2,400-word Statement to the Inspectors who are examining the plan. This explained why we consider the current proposals for crossing the railway inadequate and put forward alternative proposals that we consider the minimum to be acceptable. The Examination starts in September and the outcome is likely to be known next Spring.

The Society has objected to proposals for a new house in the garden of 4 Avenue Road. We do not consider that the application meets the requirements of Conservation Area policy in this particularly sensitive location, but we have made some suggestions that might point the way to designing an acceptable, even commendable, alternative.
